STEM

During this past school year, a team of teachers and administrators from SCS visited a fellow Christian school with a strong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) program.  The ideas we gleaned from these colleagues inspired us to research the development of a similar program at our school.
We are thrilled to formally announce that we will be piloting STEM classes for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade beginning this fall.  The Academic Resources Center (ARC) teachers will team with each homeroom teacher to provide STEM instruction once per week (starting later in the year for Kindergarten and 1st grades).  The instruction will take place in our new STEM Lab, a classroom specifically dedicated to this exciting adventure.  Much training and planning has already taken place to develop a program for our students.  Most importantly, our students will be taught how STEM principles connect with God’s Word and world as part of the distinctive Christian philosophy of education at SCS.

Some of the key objectives of the STEM classes are for our students to:

  • Ask questions and define problems
  • Develop and use models
  • Plan and carry out investigations
  • Analyze and interpret data
  • Connect what they are already learning in Science and Math with real world problems
  • Work cooperatively with other students to solve problems
  • Develop communication skills and encourage students to share their ideas in several ways (Speaking, writing, drawing, building)
  • Take ownership for their learning
